It can be hard to know what to say when themes on race, gender, sexuality, and religion take front and center. This series utilizes intergroup dialogue and a welcoming atmosphere to get you started. She is also a Marshwood High School graduate. Michaela is the author of "Sitting in A Circle: Gen Z Feminism and The Spirit", due for release in June 2021 from The Pilgrim Press, as well as a student birth doula with DONA International. As a queer, Asian, religiously mixed woman with health issues, she is committed to use her experiences from listening to her peers, and her own social justice training, to meet the pressing need for education-- especially in small towns-- that has led the U.S. to this moment in history.

Drawing the HEAD

Become an Advocate for a Child: CASA Info Night

Interested in speaking up for a Maine foster child? Learn more about being a Maine Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA). CASAs are community volunteers appointed to serve as guardians ad litem for children whose parents are involved in a child protection case. The foundation of a CASAs work is to investigate the case and then advise the judge on the childs best interest. These volunteers come from a wide variety of professional and personal backgrounds and are guided throughout the process by staff attorneys. Right now, there are more foster children than CASAs. If you have a big heart and are willing to speak up for a Maine child, please attend this informational session to learn more. CASAs must be 21 years of age, have a high school diploma or GED equivalent, and attend our comprehensive training. Kaela Jalbert, Darren Defoe, and Erin Swanson oversee the Maine CASA Program from the Capital Judicial Center in Augusta. Civil Discourse and Dialogue

Learn communication skills and that allow for meaningful and authentic conversation. Practice talking with each other while promoting different opinions and urging gracious contestation. Jacob Garner is a recent graduate of the University of New Hampshire as of May, 2020. Jacob graduated from the College of Liberal Arts where he earned his B.A. in Communication with a minor in English. His Junior year, Jacob joined the Civil Discourse Lab, which is affiliated with the Department of Communication's faculty and students. The lab's mission is to integrate pedagogy, scholarship, and praxis ‰ŰĎto strengthen the ability of students and community members to conduct meaningful conversations, collaborate, and make decisions about sometimes difficult but important topics to a civil society.‰Űť His senior year Jacob served as a student fellow and facilitator for the Civil Discourse Lab. Upon graduating, Jacob was awarded the "Distinguished Service Award" for "his outstanding service to the communication department and/or university." Throughout his junior and senior years, Jacob "committed 42+ hours towards fostering civil discourse in the community," by "meeting with the leadership team, recruiting for and participating in dialogue and deliberation events, assisting the leadership team with developing marketing ideas, as well as designing and recruiting for multiple dialogue and deliberation events."
