Robin Shaw is certified Fred Astaire Dance Instructor. She has been teaching dance since 2002 at the Portsmouth Ballroom and other adult education programs.

Beginner Ukulele

Discover the hottest, happiest musical instrument around! On it you can play folk music, rock, blues, pop, country, classical, reggae, bossa nova, jazz. Our beginners’ ukulele course is meant for people with no musical background – even people who think they are musically challenged! And, you don't even need to know how to read music! You will learn the essentials of playing ukulele in a relaxed setting -- from a popular and seasoned ukulele teacher. Using familiar songs, he introduces you to chords, strumming, and finger picking. You do need to have a playable ukulele and an electronic tuner or tuner app. Get ready to have blast making music! Duncan, a multi-instrumentalist, has been playing ukulele for 11 years and has so far taught ukulele to over 350 adults.

Beginning Beekeeping

You will learn what you need to begin beekeeping. We’ll cover tools, hive, location for an apiary, and how to obtain bees and install them in the hive. A hive opening will be part of the class. You will learn about the life cycle of the bee, what they need to survive and how to care for them year-round. We will offer numerous opportunities to work with live bees in our apiaries so that you get some hand-on experience before your bees arrive. You will be able to purchase bees and equipment through the class, if you choose. One of the class sessions will be outdoors. Bill Turner is a 34 year veteran of beekeeping, and a former MA bee inspector. Tim Fisher, a retired engineer from Portsmouth Shipyard, has assisted in teaching this class for the last five years. (Required textbook: The Beekeeper’s Handbook, 4th edition, by Diana Sammataro and Alphonse Avitabile. We will purchase the textbook for you for an additional $29 or you may obtain your own copy.)
