News Literacy and Democracy: Digging More Deeply

with George Whitbread

Free

Why is it important to become news literate, especially in a presidential election year? In this class, we will examine the many ways in which our consumption of news and information influences our decisions as citizens, and how we can become better informed voters. We’ll also explore some of the constitutional issues related to our changing world of news and information, learn why a fair and free press founded on the principles of standards-based journalism is so important in a democracy, and delve into the problems caused by mis- and disinformation. We’ll explore these topics and more in a nonpartisan and respectful manner.
