Abstract Figure Drawing & Painting - Go Beyond The Literal

with Bess Cutler

Calendar Next available session starts Oct 2, 2021 at 1 pm, runs for 5 weeks

Abstraction is seeing, analyzing and composing the essence of the model’s pose within the rectangle of the paper. To locate her in space in terms of the major shapes, gestures, lights and darks and not the details. Seeing the major swoop from her head to her feet or the dark triangle between her legs. And simplifying these major spaces again within the rectangle to create the negative spaces and creating a composition. Understanding the dynamics of composition will be a focus of this class. It’s a unique approach not like typical life-drawing classes as you know them. A fast-paced class with music to a series of loosening up exercises. Dynamic poses in a variety of poses and sometimes costumes. We will also cover mark-making, materials and distortion as well as analysis of well-known artists’ figurative work.
